Course Description
In ancient times, Japan looked up to China as a role model, and after the Meiji era, the Western countries became its new role model, which Japan emulated by embarking on a path of nation-building There were the time in which Japan was sealed off to outside world like the Edo era and developed its unique civilization, and the time in which it revolted against European and American civilization like the WWII wartime.
Japanese cultural history Ⅰ consists of lectures on Japan from ancient times to the Edo period, focusing on changes of culture. Japanese cultural history Ⅱ will consist of lectures on Japanese history after the Meiji Restoration.
Course Objectives
Japan has formed its present form through interaction with various foreign civilizations. Hereafter, it is indispensable that we deepen our international exchanges while simultaneously preserving our time-honored native traditions. We will learn how to work on this task from a wide variety of experiences of our ancestors.
