Course Description
In this course, we shall study the thoughts of Claude Henri de Saint-Simon and saint-simonians, Frederick Taylor, Eiichi Shibusawa, et. al, and on the basis of their thoughts, we shall consider the following topics:
1. Particularity (or “exception”) of the Industrial Revolution in France
2. Economic significance of Americanization.
3. Ideological background of the economic modernization of Japan.
The format of this course is mainly “lecture”, students will take “review tests” once per month (three times in total) and take part in “group discussions” to develop the essential abilities of communication and presentation.
This course is related to Diploma Policy 3 of Department of Regional Economics, Faculty of Economics.
Course Objectives
This course aims to :
1. Teach students the history of economic thought by studying the the ideas of economists and economic thinkers’ lives and the contemporaneous politics and economic circumstances.
2. On the basis of the theories of the above economists and economic thinkers, students will be able to more deeply understand the “universality of capitalism” (studied in the course “Introduction to Economic History”).
3. On the basis of the above theories, students will come to more deeply understand the “diversity of capitalism” (also studied in the course “Introduction to Economic History”).
