Course Description

Museology 3 will be given on theory of cataloging museum collection. Museums are information-driven, and the source of the information is a collection of individual objects and the mutual value of the collections. In short, museum collections have a wide variety within the scope of each museum's specialized area. In this class, you will understand the meaning and value of museum collections and learn the basic knowledge on the process of creating museum collection, such as how collections are collected, used, and stored in each museum.

Course Objectives

The objective of this class is to review the process of creating museum collections. To understand this, we will discuss about the concept of museum object, collecting, research, preservation, and utilization. Moreover, we will discuss about the activities at museums that handle various collections and deepen understanding through actual museum tour while utilizing video materials as appropriate.

Grading Policy

Grade will be evaluated by summing up the evaluation consist of class comment card (20%), the preparation of class note (40%), and the essay writing test (40%) where notebooks can be brought in the exam. Acceptance criteria will be more than 60%. Absence more than 4 times will not be allowed due to this is a qualification course. In principle, no retest will be performed.

* A class note indicates a two-hole ring file (A4 size) that summarizes "class materials" and "memos recorded and organized by the student", etc. Notebook will be collected once in the latter half of the semester.

Please read the textbook on museum collection theory. Let's take a tour of museums and art galleries, and give yourself the opportunity to think about the implications of the museum collections while viewing various exhibits.
