Course Description

The aim of this course is to help students acquire the basic knowledge and perspectives to understand education. It starts with thinking about what the education is, and considering the nature and aim of education through consideration relationships with elements of education “growth / learning”, “schools / homes”, “states / markets”, etc. Furthermore, students will understand that school education has been socially and historically defined and developed, focusing on the ideas and systems of modern education in the West and their acceptance in Japan.

Course Objectives

The goals of this course are to
(1) Explain significant and purpose of education.
(2) Understand the relationship between the concepts and elements of education.
(3) Understand the ideas that regard education about children, families, schools and society.

Grading Policy

Your overall grade will be decided based on the following:
- 1st and 2nd Reports: 40%
- Term-end examination: 60%
