This course focuses on security affairs in the international arena. “Security” means actions and practices that shield something important from threats. Generally, there are two concepts of security in the international, or global, community. One is the traditional concept: putting a premium on national defense with armed strength and economic measures. The other, which emerged in the wake of the Second World War, focuses on the freedom and welfare of individuals rather than states. We will look into each concept and examine their mutual interactions in the contemporary world.
