Course Description

Since the Meiji period(1868-1912), Western style music entered Japan and became standard in the education system. And the music of a new style came to be composed for a traditional musical instrument. In addition, the improvement musical instrument was made; in 1921, 17 stringed Koto was developed by Michio Miyagi. Then in recent years, such folk styles as Tsugaru Shamisen and Wadaiko (Japanese Drums) have become very popular. We study about these new style music played by traditional instruments in this course.
