Course Description

In Japan, various music have been handed down for a long time. Ancient court music 'Gagaku' had come to Japan from the Asian continent, and is still played even now. In the medieval period, 'Noh' emerged as a masked drama with recitations accompanied by drums and flute. Then in the early modern period, Bunraku and Kabuki were formed, where music plays a very important part. In this course, we will study the history of japanese traditional music.
