Course Description

The aim of this course is to understand what translation is. Are you familiar with the original English title of 'Akage no An'? It's 'Anne of the Green Gables.' The only remnant of the original title is 'Anne'! How about the original English title for the first volume of the Harry Potter series, 'Harry Potter to Kenja no Ishi'? It's 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone! Could you imagine that the original English word for 'Kenja' (the wise) was 'Philosopher' (tetsugakusha)? In this course, differences between grammatical translations and the actural translated works will be discussed by comparing translations and their originals. During the first half of the class, basic grammatical questions for translating English into Japanese and Japanese into English will be shown. During the latter half of the class, examples of translated works will be given to be examined. Text-book materials will be handed during each class. Class schedule may vary according to progress.
