Course Description

This course focuses on modern Japanese society and culture and explores the connection that obtains between them. World War radically transformed Japanese society and influenced the daily lives of the Japanese people in a revolutionary way. Other changed have followed after the war. Japanese society has been affected by liberalism in the 1920s, militarism in the 1930s, the triumph and devastation of the Second World War, the defeat and occupation, the birth of a new democratic Japan, the period of high economic growth, the asset bubble which burst in 1991 and such like.
The course will discuss some of these changes and analyze their impact on society and culture.
