Course Description

This course focuses on modern Japanese society and culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After the end of the Tokugawa (Edo) Period, Japan embarked upon an ambitious plan of modernization in the Meiji Period (1868-1912). We will consider the question how modernizing/Westernizing reforms affected the lives of the Japanese people.
In the spring semester, the course covers the period, 1850-1914.
