Course Description

Asia comprises the vast extension of geographical area, where extremely diverse peoples have lived out extremely diverse historical trajectories through the very long stretch of time. To discuss the social history of Asia with due specificity, Social History of Asia (I & II) focuses on the modern India, that is, India under the British Raj. Especially, the processes through which India came to be constructed as "caste society" make the main theme for discussion. Keeping an eye on the continuity and discontinuity with contemporary circumstances, the making of India in modern times will be explored.
