Japanese children’s literature has played an important role in the culture of publication and experienced its peak from the end of Taisho-era to the beginning of Showa-era. Around this period, a journal called ‘‘Akaitori’’ has attracted attention of a variety of readers. Kenji Miyazawa, one of the most popular writers, has appeared around the same period. In this lecture, I will explain the history of Japanese children’s literature and notable works by Kenji Miyazawa, with referring to various aspects of publication. I will also explain related animation movies and recitations.

I have worked as an editor and engaged in Japanese culture of publication. I have published two books for children and three books on Kenji Miyazaw. Based on the knowledge obtained from these experiences, I will explain the history of Japanese children’s literature.
