Course Description

This class explores different understanding about the nature of the societies in the West and Japan. Specifically, it focuses on the key liberal ideas including “freedom” as well as amae which has become the key concept to understand Japanese psychology. It allows students to reconsider the role of (civil) societies such as state-society relationship, democracy, social movements. It provides an opportunity to rethink deeply about today’s societies we are living in.
