Course Description

In the autumn semester of this course, we study various policy issues confronting the government of India. Just after independence, the government of India was confronted with mainly three challenges: (1) How to unite the nation that is socially divided, (2) How to develop the economy of India, and (3) How to do diplomacy in the era of Cold War. We study what policies were adopted by the government of India for tackling such challenges, and how those policies have changed over time. I will give you a quiz at the end of each class, so that you can check your understanding and express your own opinions on the topics discussed.
