This course focuses on the intellectual history of early modern Japan (17th to 19th ct.). It offers students an introduction to a wide range of primary sources from different intellectual traditions (Confucianism, Buddhism, Dutch Studies etc.) and research methods in field of intellectual history. Students are encouraged to conduct their own research projects (these can be designed as graduation projects).
This course consists of two parts. Students will continue their research projects in the second part of the course ("Nihon shiso enshu II").
