Course Description

In order to conduct research beyond a master's degree at a graduate school, it is necessary to have knowledge about the area you are majoring in and about another specialized field. You can't discuss expertise without having a perspective to compare. This is also an important requirement for graduate students majoring in Japanese history and cultural properties. In this class, you will read 'My president was black.' (above) and (below) by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the most notable writer and journalist in America, and gain a perspective on contemporary American political culture and black issues. The aim of this exercise is to raise the level of historical research from the perspective of how American political ideas are affecting the world today. You can find a lot of useful knowledge for graduate students of Japanese history and cultural properties.
