Course Description

Nowadays fine art is an important material for historical study, and in the pre-modern age most works of art reflected the thought and purpose of those who commissioned, usually men of power such as king, emperor, and aristocrats. This course aims to comprehend the political thought embedded in the ancient art. The first half treats the sculptures of the Parthenon in Athens, the second half treats the monumental buildings of the Roman Empire, including the so-called damage of memory.
