Course Description

In the spring semester of this course, we aim to understand contemporary Indian politics, economy, and society. We apply various theories to the cases of India, and also compare the cases of India with those of Japan. In the class, we study the following topics: (1) political institutions and party politics in India, (2) socio-economic factors that have influenced Indian politics, (3) various social and economic issues in India such as unemployment of the youths, farmers' issues, gender issues, environmental protection, and political corruption. I will give you a quiz at the end of each class, so that you can check your understanding and express your own opinions on the topics discussed.
