Course Description

The purpose of this class is to cultivate a multifaceted perspective on Chinese history from the Song dynasty to the Qing dynasty, with the theme of people called "Wen-ren文人" who are the protagonists of political and cultural history in the early modern period of China. The Wen-ren is the name of the people who played the dual role of (1) playing an active part in the art field with a high level of education and aesthetics, and (2) actively participating in politics and directly moving history. By knowing those who moved the history of early modern China, you will be able to see historical events from a multifaceted perspective, not limited to the framework of cultural history and art history.
