Course Description

This course will introduce students to the literary world of American minority and ethnic writers such as James Baldwin, Hisaye Yamamoto, and Sherman Alexie. Through close reading and analysis, this course will examine how race, racism, gender, and other forms of otherness are represented and questioned in these texts. As part of the teaching method, this course emphasizes the importance of understanding literary texts in their cultural and historical contexts. To enhance students’ understanding, this course will also apply interactive teaching strategies which encourage students to make connections between literature and their reality and compare the author’s cultural context with their own.
