Course Description

This course introduces students to the Japanese history from the Meiji Restoration to World War I and reviews the process Japan established itself as a modern state. A variety of challenges and issues brought by the drastic social transformation in those times will be outlined. Students are required to think out all the issues addressed in this course and draw lessons from them, which helps students cultivate their ability to consider social or political issues of our time with the awareness of the history of modern Japan.
