Course Description

In order to conduct research beyond the master's level, you need to have knowledge about your area of study and another area of specialization. You cannot discuss your specialty without having a comparative perspective. This is also an important requirement for graduate students majoring in Japanese history and cultural heritage studies. In this class, I would like you to acquire a basic knowledge of Western history through a close reading of Hiroshi Takahashi's "The Jesuits' World Strategy" (Kodansha, 2008), and at the same time, I would like you to consider its impact on the world, including Japan, and gain a global perspective, which will help you to re-position your own research. We hope that you will be able to acquire a global perspective, which will help you to re-position your own research.
