Course Description

This course is a lecture on the administration of cultural properties in Japan in general. In Japan, there is a classification system consisting of tangible cultural properties = buildings and arts and crafts (paintings, sculptures, crafts, books, archaeological materials, etc.), intangible cultural properties, folk cultural properties, historical sites scenic natural monuments, cultural landscapes, traditional buildings groups, preservation techniques, and buried cultural properties, and preservation and utilization are carried out for them. Today, the act on the protection of cultural properties was revised, and the policy of utilizing cultural properties was indicated. Under such a reason, it is necessary to learn the actual view of cultural properties, the recognition of cultural properties, the system of protection, mechanism and preservation management, and utilization for students aiming for cultural property-related positions including researchers, teachers, curators, and the private sector, as well as aspiring cultural properties as civil servants.In the first half of this course, we learn about the outline of designated cultural properties in Japan and the state of conservation administration, and in the second half, we learn about legal procedures and safety standards related to a series of flows in excavations (planning and business contracts, budget measures, preparation, implementation, arrangements, documentation, exhibition and utilization of relics).
