Course Description

Yuzo Yamamoto's novel "ROBOU NO ISHI (Roadside Stone)" was announced in 1937. The stage of this novel is the Meiji 30s (1890s). It was during the Showa 30 's (1960' s) that this novel was read most by elementary and junior high school students. There is a time span of 60 years here.
Why have many children read "old" works set in the Meiji era? Also, why will it not be read afterwards?
When reading while holding such problem consciousness, this novel is a good text to think about the issues ofeducational opportunities and social class in modern Japan.
