Course Description

 Japanese people like supernatural creatures called Yokai. The animations, games, and books based on these Yokai are quite popular in Japan, and Yokai such as “Oni,” “Kitsune,” and “Tengu” are even subjects of worship. Yokai are necessary to understand the spiritual world of Japanese people.
 This class, “Japanese Culture I,” is titled “Basic study of Yokai.” The purpose of this class is to study what Yokai are and how they are related to the world of Japanese “Kami” and “Hotoke.” At the end of the course, students will deeply understand Yokai in the Japanese spiritual world by focusing on a famous Japanese Yokai.
