Course Description

This class aims to provide students with basic knowledge of various aspects of "Japanese culture" through annual events, as well as specialized knowledge to contribute to the inheritance and development of cultural traditions and to be able to make use of this knowledge in various fields. There is a Japanese culture, which is also called "Shikikari" or "Narawashi", handed down from generation to generation in the private sector. Among these "Shikirari" and "Narawashi", this course will give concrete lectures on annual events that students naturally perform in their daily lives, and help them understand the basic knowledge and research methods of folklore. In the second semester, specific events from autumn to winter will be lectured. Especially in the second semester, students will observe an actual annual event (Tori-no-ichi at Mori-jinja Shrine in Hachioji City) to deepen their knowledge through active learning. At the end of the semester, students will choose one of the annual events covered in the second semester and conduct fieldwork (interviews with family members) on their own family's annual events so that they can apply the knowledge in various fields.
