Course Description

This lecture offers a survey of social and political thought in early modern Japan (17th to early 19th ct.). It introduces students to a wide range of primary sources as well as recent debates in the study of early modern intellectual history. The first part of this lecture focuses on primary sources from the 17th century. This lecture is designed to help students to engage in an informed discussion about Japanese culture and thought in their future professions.
