Course Description

This seminar picks up where Seminar I leaves off. It is important to be comfortable with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) before starting this course. Students will have finished an intensive study of the IPA in the Seminar I course. In this course, Seminar II, students will study advanced topics in pronunciation and the sound system of English. Topics include 1st language contrasts, syllabic consonants, consonant clusters, r and l colouring, reduced vowel sounds, connected speech, stress and rhythm, and other related concepts.
