Course Description

Currently, with the further progress of globalization, narrow nationalism, ethnocentrism and xenophobia are spreading in European countries. In order to understand modern Europe from various angles in such a situation, it is important to review the history of discrimination and persecution in the connection with the "present". Therefore, in this class, we will learn about the history of the Holocaust (Jewish slaughter) by Nazi Germany and the process of "overcoming the past" after the second world war, and consider the historical background of modern European society (Purpose ①). Furthermore, we will not only know the modern history of Europe as knowledge, but also acquire the attitude of thinking from a historical perspective the problems that EU countries are facing right now, such as immigration and the phenomenon of rightward inclination (Purpose ②).
