Course Description

Using historical documents written during the period of the Bakumatsu Restoration as texts, students will develop their reading comprehension skills and acquire the ability to research and consider the historical background of the period and the state of the region. Students will take up historical documents related to the Boshin War, read them, and deepen their consideration of the political situation at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the trends in local society that accompanied it. In the first half of the class, all students will read the historical materials in a circle while gradually confirming how to read them and what they contain, and in the second half, the class will proceed with presentations by the instructor.
