Course Description

Every year, many cultural heritages, both domestic and international, are damaged by earthquakes, fires, war and man-made disasters. After a disaster, it is necessary to restore the cultural heritage in accordance with the situation and characteristics of the damage and heritage, or to choose to do neither. In this lecture, students will learn about the basics of Japanese system for restoring historical buildings and preserving townscapes, then learn the specific examples of restoration and reconstruction of damaged World Heritage buildings and historical townscapes in Japan and overseas.
