授業の概要（ねらい）

このゼミではイギリス文学「H・G・ウェルズ」、「１９世紀・２０世紀の空想科学・SF」や映画の中で主に宇宙「時間と空間」というテーマ、また異星人・宇宙人「非人間的・ 超人的な人間・動物・異星人など」という概念について検討します。さらに日本の文学、アニメ、漫画、その他アジア/中国の文学や映画と比較することも研究します。201９年度ゼミでは、ユートピア（201６年度）、ロボット（2017年度）、モンスター（201８年度）をゼミテーマとして続けていきます。英語を積極的に使うことに興味を持ってください。秋学期の終わりでは、上記のテーマについてゼミ生全員で本を完成させる予定です。
We are going to look mainly at the concept of the alien in British literature (H.G. Wells) and science fiction and film through the imaginary of 19th and 20th century writers. I am expecting students not only to research about the notion of the alien （time and space, inhuman, animal etc）but to compare their findings to Japanese literature, anime and manga as well as Asian/Chinese sources. The seminar continues the previous year’s seminar themes of utopia, robot and monster. As we will make a book as a final class project, I expect students to be motivated to use English as a “working language” throughout the seminar.

授業の到達目標

Goals of the course are simple: to use English and critical thinking while discussing British science fiction, film and literature. Students will research a particular writer/director/poet/manga artist/musician or historical period and give regular presentations. We will connect and discuss contemporary issues linked to robots etc. It is hoped students will make a class book in the second semester.

成績評価の方法および基準

宿題（30％）class、presentation 1（30％）and report（40％）
注意：3回以上の欠席は基本的に不可とする。遅刻は20分まで。遅刻3回で欠席1回とみなします。できるだけ授業に毎回出席してください。

Homework is a must. Coming to class is a must. Coming to class on time is a must. Participation is a must. Dictionaries and notebooks a must.
A strict attendance policy will be observed. Be warned!
Students in this class are expected to be active and autonomous in learning English. This is not a class for passive students who want an easy credit.
Students are expected to attend class, do homework, prepare for tests and presentations. Failure to do so will mean failure from the course.
