授業の概要（ねらい）

This course explores different understanding about the nature of the societies in the West and Japan. Specifically, it focuses on the key liberal ideas including freedom as well as amae which has become the key concept to understand Japanese psychology. It allows students to reconsider the role of civil societies such as state-society relationship, democracy and social movements. It provides an opportunity to rethink deeply about today’s societies we are living in.
本授業では、西洋と日本の社会の本質について探究する。具体的には、日本の心理を理解するための重要な概念となっている「甘え」だけでなく、自由を含む主要なリベラルな概念に焦点を当てる。政府と社会の関係、民主主義、社会運動のような市民社会の役割を再考する。私たちが住む今日の社会について深く再考する。

・To understand the difference between Western and Japanese societies and its discussion internationally 西欧と日本の社会の違い、またそれに関する国際的な議論を理解する
・To understand the international viewpoints on Japanese culture and society 日本の文化や社会が、海外からどう理解されているのかを考える
・To get familiar with English-written literature 英語の文献に精通する

成績評価の方法および基準

・Active class participation (e.g. LMS, discussion) & assignments 積極的な授業参加 (例、LMS、ディスカッション) と課題 40%
・Presentation プレゼンテーション 30%
・Final paper 期末レポート 30%

準備学修の内容

・Read the assigned reading materials beforehand and submit the assignments when given (further detailed instruction is provided in each class) 教科書や配布された資料を事前に読み、与えられた課題を提出する（授業毎に詳細な指示をする）
・Presentation preparation (research, PPT slides, script) プレゼンテーション準備（資料調査、スライド の作成、原稿の作成）

その他履修上の注意事項

・This course is conducted mostly in English (materials, discussion, reflection papers) 主な使用言語は英語（資料、ディスカッション、リフレクション・ペーパー）
・Except for special reasons, you need to attend all classes punctually and regularly. 特別な理由がない限り、時間通りにすべての授業に出席しなければならない
・Missing more than one third of the total number of classes will result in a failing grade for the course. Also, two late arrivals are considered one absence. 授業数の3分の１以上欠席すると、不合格になる。また、2回遅刻したものを1回の欠席としてみなす
・If you are late for more than 15 minutes, you will be considered “absent” for the class. 15分以上遅刻の場合、「欠席」としてみなす
