This English class is taught through a focus on situational speaking. Classes will focus on effectively utilizing a variety of public speaking skills to achieve specific objectives. Students will develop confidence in being able to apply speaking skills and to express themselves in front of groups in English.
This semester will be divided into three complementary activities:
1. Individual Speeches: Each student will create a speech that they will deliver to the class on three occasions - Week 2, Week 7 (Midterm Exam) and Week 14 (Final Exam). The presentation should improve each time as you learn new skills.
2. Practicing Good Public Speaking Techniques (Weeks 3-6)
3. Learning how to Create a Speech by Objective (Weeks 8-13)
Assignments
Individual Speech on the Subject of Your Choice (Week 2, Midterm and Final Examinations): Students will work on one specific personal speech throughout the course of the semester. This personal speech should be in English. Therefore, it is important to practice regularly to ensure that you can confidently give your speech without relying heavily on notecards.
Students will first give their speech on Week 2, the second time on Week 7, and the final time on Week 14. Speech presentations given on Weeks 7 and 14 will count as the mid-term and final examinations. Students will be graded on how well they have incorporated and improved upon the public speaking techniques learned throughout the course of the semester.
Weeks 3-6:
Practicing Good Public Speaking Techniques: This part of the semester we will focus on learning specific public speaking techniques chosen from the list below. Instruction will be structured around small group discussions and peer feedback.
Assignments: At the end of each class students will be shown a video that demonstrates a specific public speaking technique. Each student must prepare by the following week a four minute speech on a subject of your choice that demonstrates effective usage of the specific speaking technique presented the previous week. These speeches may be in Japanese or English.
The following week the class will be divided into small groups of 4-5 students. Students will take turns giving the four minute speech they prepared and practiced to the other students in their assigned group. Students are expected to be active listeners and observers. As such, the students listening will be required write down in the forms provided 2-3 observations and some constructive feedback to the speaker. After all students have presented their speeches, the group will select the speaker that best exemplified the technique assigned for that week. The student chosen will present his/her speech to the entire class.
Weeks 8-13:
Drafting and Delivering Speeches to Achieve a Specific Objective: Speakers prepare and deliver speeches for many reasons. The objective of some speeches is to inform or to convince the audience of your opinion on a subject. The objective of other speeches maybe to inspire your audience to action. And sometimes speeches are intended simply to entertain. During this part of semester we will focus on how to draft and present speeches to achieve a specific objective. (see a list of speech objectives below). As for Weeks 8-13, students will prepare a speech that focuses on achieving the assigned speech objective. Students will be divided into small groups, listeners will provide feedback to each speaker and the best speaker from each group will present their speech to the entire class.
