Course Description

Museology 4 will be given on the preservation theory of museum collections. Preserving the valuable historical, academic, and artistic resources of the area is a fundamental mission of the museum. The purpose of this class is to acquire the basic idea and knowledge about the preservation of collections, and to understand the series of processes of preserving museum collections.

Course Objectives

The objective of this class is to review the survey and preservation methods for museum collections using scientific methods. In order to understand this, we will discuss about the identification of the materials consist of collections and analysis methods. Moreover, storage and repair methods for each collection and the design of the storage environment for museums will be also discussed. Further, we will discuss about the preservation activities at individual museums while utilizing video materials as needed to deepen their understanding.

Grading Policy

Grade will be evaluated by summing up the evaluation consist of class comment card (20%), the preparation of class note (40%), and the essay writing test (40%) where notebooks can be brought in the exam. Acceptance criteria will be more than 60%. Absence more than 4 times will not be allowed due to this is a qualification course. In principle, no retest will be performed.

* A class note indicates a two-hole ring file (A4 size) that summarizes "class materials" and "memos recorded and organized by the student", etc. Notebook will be collected once in the latter half of the semester.
